Dear Fastcap users!
I am new to this software...I wanna get capacitance of double dot system. Can anyone help me how to make input file? How to do meshing? what is preferred file format like should I make neutral, or generic or list file? Do I need to purchase this software?

Regarding your question, I suggest you to start with the simple video training available at ht*p://w*w.fastfieldsolvers.com/training.htm
You should also get familiar with FastCap2 or FasterCap user's guides. The first is the original FastCap MIT user's guide and is available through the embedded online help in FastCap2; the second is the embedded online help itself.
As for meshing, most of the users create their own scripts to do that, however you also have these options:
- for simple geometries, you can use the simple generators you can launch in a shell (DOS under Win, or the Linux shell of your preference)
- for ICs, you can obtain a demo version of WRCad from Whiteley Research (w*w.wrcad.com) that is able to directly create the files for FastCap2 or FasterCap
- for other geometries, you can use a CAD program and export the mesh, converting it to the simple FastCap2 / FasterCap format. For the latter, we are currently investigating the usage of the powerful, open-source software FreeCAD. I could provide you some Python script to help you with the export in this case.
I do not recommend neutral file (Patran) as it is not very simple.
Please note also that FasterCap is easier to use w.r.t. meshing because it has the automatic capability to refine the mesh up to the required level, plus other interesting capabilities you can see and compare at ht*p://w*w.fastfieldsolvers.com/products.htm. But yes, FastCap2 is free, while FasterCap can be freely evaluated for Demo, and requires a license for usage after that.

I'm a new user as well and would also be interested in finding an easy meshing solution. In your answer to Maria you mention "simple generator"

The generators are shell programs, distributed in the FastFieldSolvers bundle (for Windows; for *nix, you can rely on the original M.I.T. source code distribution). You can find them under the installation directories. The use of these generators is described in the User's manual.
Our preferred generator, however, at the moment is FreeCAD, as said in the previous post. It uses NetGen and Mefisto as meshers, but offers a nice and powerful GUI for modeling and visualization.

| Sorry to resurrect the topic. I have the same problem but I have some experience in Autodesk Inventor. To Your knowledge what would be the best way to import a design from there to Fastcap? |

Since FreeCAD is a fully free tool, I still can recommend exporting from Autodesk Inventor to FreeCAD, and do the meshing & export there.
I am not familiar with Autodesk Inventor, but you should be able to export to either .step or .iges format files, that you can then import in FreeCAD.
