Hi all,

I have just started taking a closer look at FasterCap and testing some simple homegrown 2D test structures and found one really astonishing thing:
normally MAXWELL C-Matrix must be quadratic e.g. 3x3, but:

What FasterCap sometimes outputs are rectangled matrices, e.g. 2x3.

Can anybody help ? Has anybody had a similar case ?

Please see the FasterCap online help, about FasterCap output. It explains you why.

In the 2D case, the potential at infinity is not zero (the potential decreases as log(1/r), where 'r' is the distance from the source). Therefore, the potential is always referenced to one of the conductors, which is assumed to have zero potential (ground conductor). This last conductor is therefore not explicitly included in the Maxwell capacitance matrix row / columns.

Remember also that the unit of measurement of the capacitance matrix in this case is F/m.


If the above explanation is still unclear, I may suggest you to review the theory about 2D capacitance calculations on standard physics textbooks.
